DNR: Hunting Opportunities Still Available in N. Michigan

Beat the winter blues with some wintertime hunting and trapping.

Small game hunting

Cottontail rabbit and snowshoe hare season is open statewide through March 31.

Squirrel hunting season, for both fox and gray squirrels, is open statewide through March 31.

Furbearer hunting and trapping

Coyote, gray and red fox, muskrat and mink trapping seasons are open through March 1, statewide.

Coyote hunting season is open year-round, and fox (gray and red) hunting is open through March 1, statewide.

Raccoon trapping season is open through March 31, statewide. Raccoon hunting season is open through January 31, statewide.

Beaver and otter trapping seasons vary based on unit and residency status. (See page 30 of the Fur Harvester Digest.)

Bobcat hunting season opened January 1. Bobcat trapping season dates vary based on the unit in which you’re trapping. Please note: bobcat kill tags had to be obtained prior to November 30, 2018 in order to hunt or trap for the 2018/2019 season. See pages 28 - 29 of the Fur Harvester Digest for bobcat harvest regulations.

Badger trapping season is open to Michigan residents in Zone 3 through March 1. The limit is one per resident fur harvester.

Spring turkey applications

Spring turkey hunting applications are on sale January 1 – February 1. Applications are $5 and can be purchased online at michigan.gov/turkey or at a license agent.
