Newberry Girls Open with Win

The Newberry girls’ basketball team survived a lowscoring game to open its season, defeating the Manistique Emeralds 25—22 Monday night.

Neither team got off to a good start, although the action was fast and furious. By the end of the first quarter, Newberry held a 3—2 lead. By the end of the first half the Indians had pulled away, out in front of Manistique 12—9.

The Emeralds took the lead in the beginning minutes of the third quarter, but Adrian Depew nailed a couple of buckets later in the quarter to take the lead back 19—15 going into the final eight minutes.

Newberry maintained its lead throughout the fourth, with Kate Rahilly hitting four out of six from the line.

Both Depew and Rahilly ended up with 10 points each. Ambriah Ducsay added the rest of the total score with five points.

Emily Daniel paced Manistique with 10 points. Sydny Peterson had five, Kayla Muth four, Brooke Richy two and Joslyn Muth one.

Newberry’s Junior Varsity also prevailed, outscoring their older sisters 39—24.

The Indian team led all the way, starting with an 11—9 advantage at the end of the first.

By halftime Newberry enjoyed a 20—14 lead, but the Emeralds caught up to within striking distance by the end of the third quarter, trailing Newberry 24—22. Brenna Pavey bailed Newberry out by scoring 19 points.

Bailey Zellar and Sophy Smithson both offered six, Abby Smithson five, Jen Dzelak two and April James one.

On Deck

The JV girls join the JV boys going on a road trip to St. Ignace Monday, December 10.

The Varsity boys and girls host the Saints Tuesday, December 11.
