Newberry Bows to Rudyard Bulldogs in District Play

by Jeff Rochefort

The Lady Indians traveled to Rudyard last Tuesday night, October 30, to take on the Bulldogs in the first round of volleyball districts.

The Indians got off to a slow start, down 11—3 in the first set. A spike for a point by Ambriah Ducsay and a block for another point by Adrian Depew helped cut the lead to 12— 6. The rest of the set was hard-fought while adjusting to the angle of the Bulldog spikes. The Lady Indians lost the first set 25—11.

Newberry started strong in the next set. Points by Emily Smart and Depew got the Indians out to an early 3—2 lead. The Bulldogs then took the next 15 points to take control of the set.

There were some tough blocks that didn’t bounce the Indians’ way. Several digs were difficult to handle, as well as few bad bounces, leading to the bad stretch.

When the Indians finally broke their serve the score was 17—3 in Rudyard’s favor. The rest of the set was closely fought. Spikes by Elena Edwards, Katie Rahilly and Depew helped the Indians with their own run, scoring five of the next six points.

The Bulldog lead was too much to overcome in the end, however, as the Bulldogs won the second set 25— 10.

The third set started off strong again as the Indians fought to stay close. Much like the second set, a big run by the Bulldogs gave them a 12—2 lead. The Lady Indians didn’t give up. Pointsoff serves by Abby Edwards and Jenna Johnson helped cut the deficit to 17—8.

After both teams exchanged several points, Rahilly got the serve and the Lady Indians went a fivepoint run to get the score to 20—15. Once the Bulldogs broke serve, each team exchanged points until the end, with the Bulldogs winning the third set 25—17.

The Lady Indians lost the match 0 – 3, but the final numbers don’t show the heart and determination displayed from start to finish. Congratulations to everyone on a great season.
