Elks Announce Annual Hoop Shoot Competition

Competition for the 46th annual Elks Hoop Shoot, the national free throw shooting contest for youngsters age eight through 13, will be held at the J.L. De- Cook High School Gymnasium in Newberry Saturday, November 10 at 9:00 a.m. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the gymnasium.

More than three million youngsters from throughout the country entered last year’s competition for boys and girls in age categories eight – nine, 10 - 11 and 12 - 13. Each contestant has 25 shots at the hoop. The boy and girl in each age group with the best scores advance through four tiers of competition to qualify for the national finals.

Local winners will compete against other contestants in the Upper Peninsula finals to be held Saturday, December 15 at Manistique High School in Manistique. Names of the national winners will be inscribed on the Elks National “Hoop Shoot” plaque, on permanent display in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield,


Contestants for the local event on November 10 are asked to be accompanied by an adult and provide proof of age to determine the age group in which they’ll compete. 2019.

Contestants must be eight years old as of April 1, 2019 and cannot reach the age of 14 prior to April 1, 2019 in order to be eligible to compete in this year’s competition.
