What’s in a NAME?

Hamilton Lake

Hamilton Lake was named for Philip and Emma Hamilton, early settlers. They had moved to the Newberry area in the early 1880s where Phil, a former policeman, quickly became one of the town's bigwigs, owning a hotel, running for office. He also established a farm south of town next to which was the body of water now named for him.

The surname Hamilton comes from Leicestershire, England, and referred to people from Hameldun, meaning “crooked hill.”
