Charles J. Given

Charles J. Given of Grand Marais died peacefully at the age of 93 June 28, 2018 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette.

He was born September 28, 1924 in Elyria, OH, a son of the late William G. and Sophia M. (Pokropovish).

He graduated from high school and, at the age of 19, entered the Air Force. He was a WWII Crew Chief on a DC3/C47 air transport airplane. He was honorably discharged December 14, 1945.

After leaving the Air Force he attended the University of Detroit, earning a degree in Electrical Engineering. On October 20, 1967 he married the former Alma Esper and they made their home in the Detroit area until 1988. He worked for General Motors – Fisher Body Division until his retirement.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and he enjoyed everything Grand Marais had to offer.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Alma, April 1, 2017, along with three siblings. He is survived by nine nieces and nephews.

Mass will be celebrated Saturday, July 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Grand Marais with Fr. Tim Hruska officiating. Friends may greet the family from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Interment will follow in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Grand Marais.
