Car Show Returns to Newberry Avenue July 20-21

The 25th annual Tahquamenon Valley Mid-Summer Car Show will return to Newberry July 20 and 21.

At last year’s show Dave and Vicki Fall announced that the Tahquamenon Valley Cruisers no longer would host the show and was looking for another group to take over.

The Newberry Area Chamber of Commerce, Newberry Lions Club and village of Newberry have stepped up to continue the 25-year tradition.

According to Newberry Area Chamber of Commerce director Roberta Huffman, “There are multiple cars already prregistered and 12 vendors pre-registered.” She also stated that additional volunteers are needed to help with the show.

This year’s event begins Friday, July 20 with the annual cruise to Muskallonge Lake State Park. The line-up will start at 5:00 p.m. at the Quality Inn.

The Parade of Classics will proceed down Newberry Avenue at 5:30 p.m. Following the cruise there will be a poker run for those participating, along with a sock- hop with a DJ at the Newberry Elks Lodge from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m.

The show itself will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, July 21. Along with the display of classic cars, there will be a Community Action breakfast, numerous craft and food vendors, a kids’ bounce house, Lions 50/50, kids’ bike raffle and Elks cornhole tournament and beer tent.

Other events include the kids’ pedal tractor pull from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and the ever popular engine blow-up at 2:00 p.m.

The doomed vehicle is drained of oil and antifreeze and started up. Spectators can place a bet when the engine will seize up. The closest to the correct time will win the pot.

During the show Newberry Avenue (M-123) will be closed to normal traffic from Truman Boulevard to Helen Street. There will be detour signs to direct traffic to either Phelps or Handy Streets.
