What’s in a NAME?

Church at "Le Neubourg." Church at "Le Neubourg." Everyone knows that the Village of Newberry was named after John Stoughton Newberry (1826-1887), a Detroit financier who organized the first railroad through our area. His family name is English in origin, coming to the United States in the early 1600s.

The family descends from a Norman knight named Robert de Newbeurg, so-called because he was born in Castle Neubourg in Neubourg, France. The name means "New Town" from "new" and "burg" or "bourough" (originally meaning a self-governing, fortified settlement).
