Petition Language Approved for Village Recall

Petition Language Approved for Village Recall

The language for the petition to recall two Village of Newberry trustees has been approved by Luce County.

Trustees Sharon Brown and Charles “Buzz” Medelis, who are also Newberry Water and Light Board members, have had recall petitions brought forward by Mike Winn and Mike Schnorr, respectively.

There was a clarity/factual hearing held before Clayton Graham, Luce County Probate Court Judge, on May 2. The recall petition language was denied due to lack of clarity. A second petition to recall was filed shortly thereafter, and another review was held May 16, again in front of Judge Graham.

Time has elapsed for the trustees being recalled to appeal the decision. Sponsors of the petition have requested from Luce County the amount of signatures needed for the petition.

The county has approved the amount of signatures needed, and the petition now can be circulated. If the sponsors receive the necessary signatures, the recall will be on the November ballot.

Those who sign the petition must be registered voters who live within the village. Once the signatures have been gathered, they will need to be verified and then challenged.

If the signatures are validated and a recall election is held, the incumbent is automatically on the ballot. Anyone that is eligible to run for office must have a nomination petition signed and turned in within 10 days after the call for a recall.
