Lady Indians Split against Blue Devils, Saints


Jenna Johnson on her way to first base last Thursday. Jenna Johnson on her way to first base last Thursday. The Lady Indians played host to the Sault Blue Devils Tuesday, May 8 for a pair of conference games.

Game 1 was a 6—1 victory for the Indians as Mercadez Allen pitched a beautiful game, striking out eight while walking one.

Ambriah Ducsay led the offense with three hits, featuring a double and a triple. Arielle Wilson had two hits with two runs batted in. Abby Edwards, Katie Rahilly, Jenna Johnson, Mercadez Allen, Elena Edwards and Jasmine Allen all contributed hits for the Lady Indians.

Game 2 was a 13—11 defeat in a high-scoring affair. Ducsay had three hits again in the nightcap, as well as three runs batted in. Jasmine Allen also had three hits, including a double with three runs batted in.

Johnson and Arielle Wilson had two hits apiece, while Abby Edwards, Rahilly, Mercadez Allen, Megan Burton and Edwards all collected hits.

Thursday, May 10 the St. Ignace Saints came to town for a pair of non-conference games in less-than-ideal conditions.

Game 1 was a 21—11 win for Newberry. Johnson got the pitching victory with five strikeouts and six walks.

Rahilly and Johnson led the way with five hits apiece, the former with three doubles and a triple with seven runs batted in. Jasmine Allen had three hits for the game. Edwards, Ducsay, Wilson and Alexis Groenhout offered two hits apiece and Mercadez Allen had a hit in the victory.

Freshman Jen Dzelak pitched the nightcap, coming up just a wee bit short, 16—15. She had three strikeouts and four walks in a gutsy performance.

Burton was good for three hits in the game, including a home run. Rahilly also collected three hits. Johnson contributed two hits, a triple and a home run. Edwards and Ducsay both had two hits, while Brenna Pavey, Majken Labadie and Dzelak added one each.

The Lady Indians will welcome Pellston for a Wednesday doubleheader at the Charles Road complex.
