John F. Witer

John F. Witer, 81, of Newberry died Monday afternoon, April 2, 2018 at his residence.

Born December 26, 1936 in Billings Township, son of the late John and Blanche (White) Witer, he was a graduate of Beaverton High School. He continued his education at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, where he was a member of the NMU football team and received his bachelor’s degree in education.

On February 27, 1960 he married the former Wealtha MacDonald in Midland. He started his employment at Helfrechts Machine Company in Saginaw until he was drafted into the United States Army. He served until his honorable discharge January 22, 1964, attaining the rank of fourth grade specialist.

Following his service he continued his employment at Helfrechts and later at Saginaw Steering Gear as a tool and die maker until his retirement in May of 1999.

He and his wife resided in Gladwin for more than 25 years and, following his retirement, moved to Newberry in 1999. He was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church in Newberry and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Marie Pitt.

Survivors include his loving wife, Wealtha of Newberry; children, Karen Witer of Mt. Pleasant and Anthony (Jennifer) Witer of Anna, OH; five grandchildren and one great-grandson; and sister, Kathleen (Edward) Wejsa of Essexville.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, April 6 at St. Gregory Catholic Church with Fr. Marty Flynn officiating. Rite of Committal will take place at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Cemetery in Anna, OH.
