Robert C. Hartwig

After a long battle with cancer, Robert Charles Hartwig of Engadine, 53, passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family .

He was born at Mount Carmel Hospital in Detroit May 17, 1964. He grew up in the Mount Clemens area and graduated from L’Anse Cruese High School - North in 1982. Shortly after graduation, he started his own masonry business, Hartwig Construction. After moving to the Upper Peninsula in 1997, he continued to work in the masonry and construction field.

His true passion, in addition to his family and friends, was hunting and fishing. His favorite trips were out west to hunt with his boys, brothers and friends. In the fall and every summer, he loved to head north and catch walleyes in Wawa, Canada. He also built a cabin from the ground up with his sons and loved to spend time there around the bonfire.

He is survived by his wife, Melissa (Carrier); sons, Mike (Sharon) and Daniel (Kaylee); stepchildren, Anna and Chad, all of Engadine; father, Robert (Jennifer) of Pinckney; mother, Cherrell (James) of Engadine; brothers, John of St. Clair, Kenny (Lisa) of Chesterfield and Steven (Lynette) of St. Clair Shores; sister, Michele (Shannon) Packan of St. Clair; step-siblings, Jim, Laura and Dan; multiple nieces and nephews; and the Bell and Flatt families.

Visitation will be held at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Naubinway Sunday, March 11 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Stephen’s Monday, March 12 at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Marty Flynn officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made directly to them for a charity of their choice.
