NHS Wrestlers Tune Up for Districts

Newberry’s wrestling team traveled to Munising last Wednesday, January 31 to take on the Mustangs and meet the Marquette team.

The Marquette squad, representing a much larger school, was able to field most of the weight classes and consequently won a lot of points by way of Newberry forfeits.

They obtained 30 points the easy way.

Jared Norris started the meet at 112, but was defeated by Joe Lawson. Noah Gielecki lost the 125 match to Trenton Martin.

Nathan Magnusson defeated Griffen Moore with a 6 - 1 decision to get the Indians on the scorebook.

Hunter Phillips lost to Richard Weycker in the 140 match. Cameron Depew was defeated by Bailey Loukiner, giving the Marquette team a 36—3 lead at that point.

Cameron Symonds won a major decision (18 - 2) over Liam Groves at 152, followed by an Alex Henry victory by a narrow 11 - 10 decision over Jacob Johnson.

The last Indian to compete was Hunter Fossitt, who lost to Richard Sneller.

Marquette took Newberry 60—11.

The Indians had a much closer match with Munising, although Henry did not compete due to illness.

Gielecki, Magnusson and Norris all won by forfeits.

Mustang Nick Miles moved up a weight class to defeat Phillips, instead of taking on Magnusson, who had defeated Miles last week.

Depew defeated Devin Moorewitha9-7decision. Depew and Moore were tied at seven at the end of the second period, but a reversal by Depew gained him two points and he rode that edge until the end.

Symonds beat Trevor Johnson, putting the Indians ahead 21—6; however, Newberry forfeited the next three weights, giving the Mustangs a 24—21 edge.

Fossitt at 285 pinned J.J. Sage just before the first period ended to put the lead back in Newberry’s corner, 27—24. Norris’s six points from a Mustang forfeit gave the Indians a 34—24 victory.

The team goes to St. Ignace to take on the Saints in the Team Districts today, Wednesday, February 7. The winner then will take on Rudyard.

The Individual Districts take place in Munising Saturday, February 10.

Four wrestlers medaled at the St. Ignace North Star Challenge last Saturday afternoon. Cameron Symonds, Nate Magnusson and Lance Bowler all were champs in their weight category. Alex Henry placed second in his.

Magnusson, at 135, defeated David Cole of the Sault in his first round and then took Brandon Nieman of W.P. for the championship.

Bowler had the toughest time in the 140-poiund class. He faced three different individuals, defeating the Sault’s Kaden King, Josh Green of W.P. and Hunter Brown of St. Ignace for the championship.
