Feeding America Brings Mobile Pantry to TAS

Wednesday, January 17 Feeding America West Michigan will distribute thousands of pounds of food to people in need at the Tahquamenon Area Schools (TAS) cafeteria. The distribution will take place at 3:00 p.m.

The Mobile Pantry will offer fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products and baked goods. The food is intended for anyone in need in Newberry and the surrounding area. Clients will not have to show identification or proof of income to receive food. They are encouraged to bring their own bags, boxes or clothesbaskets.

Food insecurity affects one in eight people in West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. In 2015 Feeding America West Michigan’s Mobile Pantry program provided 10.7 million pounds of food to people in the region. That’s the equivalent of nearly nine million meals.

“Tahquamenon Area Schools received a grant to provide Feed America to people in the Newberry area six times during the 2017 - 2018 school year,” explained TAS superintendent Stacy Price. “We’re very excited for this opportunity to help out our community. We’ll be hosting the Pantry each month, January – April 2018.”
