Northstar’s academy students traveled to Petoskey Friday to compete in the Superior Conference Bible quizzing, followed by a soccer tournament.

Our Varsity quizzers were in the first three matches. In round one Northstar faced Petoskey and Rogers City.

Hannah Handrich paced the team, helping members jump out to an early 80-40 lead over Petoskey. Josh Teller cranked it up for Petoskey and took them to an 80-120 lead over Northstar. So it went back and forth. Northstar answered the final three questions, but fell one short. The final was Northstar 180, Petoskey 200 and Rogers City -10.

In the second round Boon came in against Northstar and Petoskey and dominated 300 to Northstar’s 50 and Petoskey’s 40.

In the third round last year’s champions, the Soo, quizzed against Boon and Northstar. The scores were tied at 60-60-60 and later it was 90-80-80. Logan Handrich answered three straight to make it 90-80 and Northstar 120. The Soo came back and answered four of the last five for the double win. The final was the Soo 170, Boon 100 and Northstar 110.

At the end of the day the Soo emerged in first place, 5 - 1. Boon and Petoskey went 4 - 2, Northstar 3 - 3, Rogers City 2 - 4 and Manistique 0 - 6 .

Hannah Handrich led Northstar with 150 (sixth) and Logan Handrich scored 100 (ninth). Megan Williams added 60 and Brandon Williams 30.

Varsity players each with a quiz-out were Joshua Teller (Petoskey), Jackson Borst (Boon) and Huey Fowler from the (Soo).

In the Junior Varsity competition Northstar went 5 – 1, dropping its final round to the Soo on the last question. The scores were: Round one – Northstar 320, Petoskey 60 and Rogers City 20. Round two – Boon 20, Northstar 280 and Petoskey 60. Round three – the Soo 210, Boon 0 and Northstar 180.

Hannah Handrich had two quiz-outs and a total of 320 points (third) to lead the team. Logan Handrich was right behind with 280 (fourth). Megan Williams had 120, and Daniel Handrich added 40 and Jacob Neill 20.

Huey Fowler from the Soo leads the conference with 350 (three quiz-outs). His teammate Elijah Depew is one question back with 330 (two quiz-outs). Jeremy Crowder from Manistique had a quiz-out, as did Ashley Rauhaus from Petoskey.

The JV standings are: the Soo 6 - 0, Northstar 5 - 1, Petoskey 4 - 2, Manistique 2 - 4, Boon 1 - 5 and Rogers City 0 - 6. Northstar will host the next quiz November 3.

In the soccer tournament Northstar played Petoskey in the first game. Landmark led 4—0 at the half, stretching its lead to 7—0 before Malcolm Peterson put Northstar on the board at 8:24 in the second half. Peterson added two more and Logan Handrich scored one in the 9—4 loss.

After a few minutes’ rest Northstar went up against Rogers City, which led at the half 3—1. The final was 8—2. Malcolm Peterson and Marc Matchinski scored the goals for Northstar. All the young boys are gaining experience, and improvements are seen almost daily.

In the final game of the day Petoskey beat Rogers City 3—1.

The teams travel to Rogers City Friday, October 13 for a 1:00 p.m. start.

School pictures are scheduled for Monday, October 16.

Northstar’s annual Harvest party will take place this Thursday at the Lakefield Township Hall at 5:30 p.m.

Happy Birthday this week to Daniel Handrich on the 12th, Katie Aldrich on the 13th and Jill Jaeger on the 14th.

The wood bee is scheduled for Saturday at 8:00 a.m. Lunch will be provided.

Missionary Biz Lerisse will be preaching in the p.m. service this Sunday. The Lerisse family serves in the Dominican Republic and hosted a group from Northstar on a mission trip this past July.
