U.P. All-Star Basketball Games Scheduled

by Stephen King

This coming Saturday, June 17, the 32nd annual U.P. All-Star Classic will take place at Marquette High School featuring the best of the recently graduated high school basketball players from around the U.P.

There is a very strong contingent from the Eastern U.P. for the Girls’ North team. Engadine’s Olivia Vaughn and Newberry’s Taylor Bryant are just two of the U.P. senior basketball players who will be participating.

Other EUP girls joining Vaughn and Bryant on the North team are Kayla Rambo of Pickford and Madison Wilke of DeTour.

Additional girls on the North team include: Marissa Maino of Ishpeming, Carsyn Osterman of Baraga, Amber Huebner of Marquette, Haily Wickstrom of Calumet, Maija Sebbas of Hancock and Bailey Froberg of L’Anse.

Commented North coach Roger French of Engadine, “I feel honored and grateful to be part of this. The talent that I will see together from all the U.P. will be exciting. As for my coaching, the offensive and defensive strategies are not that complicated at Engadine. We try to keep that simple and focus on fundamentals of the game and the athlete’s strength and conditioning.”

Opposing them from the EUP on the South team is Jordon Belleville of St. Ignace.

Other members of the Girls’ South team include: Frankie Mattson and Marissa Immel of Munising, Abby Nylund and Becky Kolenda of Forest Park, Jordan Kraemer and Britta Grayvold of Norway, Jen Brandt of Escanaba, Kelsey Boucher of Bark River Harris and Emily Kinner of West Iron. Their coach is Norway’s Carli Kelly.

Notable members of the Boys’ North team are Ryley Alaspa of the Sault, Derrick Edington of Pickford, Trent Bell and Dre Tuominen of Negaunee, Alex Duvall of Marquette, Duane Englund of Mid-Pen, Reed Wiedenhoefer of Gwinn, Austin Berglund of Ewen Trout Creek and Mitchell Borseth of Ontonagon.

The Boys’ North coach is Marquette’s Brad Nelson.

On the Boys’ South team are: Dawson Bilski, Jason Whitens, Marcus Krachinske and Bobby Kleiman, all from the state Championship North Central; Carson Wonders from Iron Mountain; Tyler Willette from Escanaba; Justin Bal from Norway; A.J. Weisnicht from West Iron; and Darien Nichols from Manistique.

The Boy’s South coach is Adam Mercier of North Central.

The Skills Contest starts at 11:00 a.m., with the girls’ game to follow at 12:00 noon and the boys’ game at 2:00 p.m. All proceeds will go towards the U.P. Hall of Fame Scholarship Program.
