“Only in America” to be Celebrated Only in Newberry

Now’s the time to plan your entry for the Kiwanis Club of Newberry’s 2017 Independence Day Parade, set for Tuesday, July 4.

This year’s theme, “Only in America,” was chosen from suggestions made by Ms. McNamara’s fourth grade students of Newberry Elementary School, for which they received a $100 prize from Kiwanis.

Serving as Grand Marshals this year will be Charter Members of the Newberry Kiwanis Club. Special guests also will be present to mark the 100th Anniversary of the Michigan State Police.

Participants are encouraged to dress up and/or build floats that incorporate this theme. Including patriotic music with the float is encouraged.

Cash prizes, donated by local businesses, will be awarded in the following categories: Judges’ Award, $150; Best Use of Parade Theme, $100; Best Commercial Float, $100; and Best Family/Organization Float, $100.

Prizes for decorated bikes and scooters will be provided by the Kiwanis Club of Newberry.

On the day of the parade participants are asked to sign up outside the American Legion beginning at 9:00 a.m. and then line up along East Victory Way before the parade starts at 10:30 a.m. down Newberry Avenue.

Immediately following the parade Kiwanians will serve their traditional chicken barbecue.

HELP IS NEEDED! Any community member interested in volunteering for this year’s parade is asked to call Dave at 293-5810 or 293- 5168.
